Aiming is one of the most important aspects of Fortnite. You may be a fantastic builder who can build a massive tower in a few seconds, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to taking enemies down. If you want to be the last person standing, you’ll have to improve your aim.
Our comprehensive Fortnite aiming guide comes with many tips and tricks you can use to land more shots.
How to improve aim in Fortnite
Use First-Shot Accuracy
First-Shot Accuracy (FSA) is a Fortnite mechanic that makes your shots 100% accurate. If you are bothered by bloom, you need to use this to your advantage. Despite the mechanic being in the game since 2018, many players don’t know about it.
If you want to improve your aim in Fortnite, it’s essential that you learn how First-Shot Accuracy works. It’s mostly enabled on assault rifles and affects the very first shot you fire. By using it properly, you can gain 100% accuracy throughout the entire fight and take enemies down with ease.
The image above shows what it looks like when you use the FSA in Fortnite. The aim reticle gets smaller, allowing you to hit every single shot. This means that, as long as the mechanic is activated, your shot will go at the exact same spot the reticle is pointed at. In other words, you will not be affected by bloom.

Slow it down
Despite being fully-automatic, assault rifles are not meant to be fired quickly. You may use the weapon and its fully-automatic mode at close ranges, but you will have to tap-fire it to make it accurate at medium and long distances. If you don’t do this, you will be relying on luck.
To activate First-Shot Accuracy, aim down sights and stop moving. Once you fire the first shot, the mechanic will deactivate for a brief period, depending on the weapon. This usually takes around one second.
The screenshot above shows the aim reticle when First-Shot Accuracy is not enabled. In this case, your shots will be affected by bloom, which also means that you won’t have full control over them. To reactivate FSA, simply stop firing the weapon.
Once you learn to control how to tap-fire weapons, your aim in Fortnite will be drastically better. Try out this tip next time you get into Fortnite, and we promise that you will hit many more shots.
Movement can improve your Fortnite aim
Improving your Fortnite aim can be easily done by simply paying attention to your movement. To land more shots, you will have to stop moving and crouch. This will make the aim reticle much smaller, allowing you to take enemies down in a second.
If you keep moving while shooting, especially if you are standing, you will be affected by the bloom. Considering how unpredictable it is, this is far from the ideal scenario, and you’ll likely end up missing most of your shots.
While you are not moving, you will also be more likely to get hit by enemies. Due to this, you need to read the situation and use movements to your advantage.
Learn how to use different kinds of weapons
Some weapons in Fortnite are versatile, like assault rifles. This means that you can use them in close-range fights, but also in medium or long ranges. However, these weapons are most effective from medium ranges, and there are far better options for close-quarters or long-distance shots.
Each weapon in the game has its effective range and damage drop-off. Due to this, submachine guns will have their damage drastically reduced when hitting targets that are four tiles away or further. On top of that, it’s nearly impossible to control them from this distance.
Most Fortnite weapons have damage drop-off, but there are a few exceptions, such as the Rocket Launcher and sniper rifles. These are the most effective weapons from every range:
- Close range: Submachine guns, shotguns
- Close-to-medium range: Tactical Assault Rifle, Drum Gun, Minigun, pistols
- Medium range: Assault rifles (including scoped, heavy, and suppressed variants)
- Long range: Sniper rifles, Hunting Rifle
While you can use the Assault Rifle from a close range, you will be much better off using a shotgun or a submachine gun. These weapons are meant to be used from close ranges and will outplay assault rifles in nearly every scenario.
Change your Fortnite settings
You may know all about First-Shot Accuracy, movement, and the types of weapons you are supposed to use, yet your Fortnite aim may not be good enough. If this is the case, you should try to change your settings.
If you play Fortnite on a controller, you will need to adjust sensitivity and dead zones. On a keyboard and mouse, make sure to have keybinds you are comfortable with, as well as sensitivity for your mouse.
There are many different presets and settings online, but you will have to find out something you are comfortable with. Make sure to take your new settings for a test drive once you change them. The best way to do this is by playing Fortnite Creative maps.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to get used to your new Fortnite settings. This is a process that can take a couple of days, but it should eventually pay off.
Practice to improve your Fortnite aim
Our Fortnite aiming guide will most certainly improve your skills. However, you won’t be able to land shots consistently unless you practice. Due to this, we advise you to try out one of the Fortnite aim training courses.
Once you feel more comfortable with your settings, you may also decide to square off against other players in Creative mode. When you are 100% confident, go into Battle Royale and see how well you aim.
Here are some of the Fortnite practice maps we’d like you to try out:

Furthermore, you can also use Fortnite bot lobbies to practice and improve your aim. AI-controlled players are weak and easy to eliminate, which makes these lobbies perfect for new players and those who are getting used to new settings.
